The last thing you want to see is a rubbish tip when you’re hiking in the hills. So it’s not surprising that purposeful outdoor brands like Patagonia and REI are at the forefront when it comes to extending the life of items they make and sell.
Patagonia has been leading the way with their brilliant Worn Wear initiative, but REI is no slouch. For a while their stores have been running quarterly Garage Sales. Members queue around the block to buy pre-loved REI tents, boots, jackets and more that are no longer wanted or needed.
In late 2017, REI took it a step further, going digital in partnership with Yerdle ReCommerce. Now you no longer need to wait for the quarterly garage slot, or patiently queue for a bargain pair of pre-used crampons.
