Founded by Yves Chouinard in 1973, Patagonia’s Mission is to ‘build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis’. The company’s powerful commitment to their Mission arises from a genuine love of the outdoors, expressed in Chouinard’s book ‘Let My People Go Surfing‘ (2005).
It’s not the most poetic Mission statement, but it captures the foundational principles of how they do business, and drives bold initiatives such as ‘Don’t Buy this Jacket’, Worn Wear and ‘The President Stole your Land’. The one statement is enough: no need here for an additional set of values.
