It’s a big challenge for many Sustainability teams: how to get employees involved, in ways that are inspiring and impactful?
To celebrate its anniversary year in 2015, global chemicals company BASF launched its Connected to Care initiative. The idea is to support employees who want to implement a project together with colleagues, friends or club members in cooperation with a charitable organization – in one of three core BASF areas—food, smart energy, and urban living.
Over 500 project ideas were received in the first year. All employees were given the chance to vote (about 35,000 employees did so) and 150 project ideas were selected, each winning a €5,000 grant from BASF. Winning projects included providing clean drinking water in Africa, supporting female refugees in Sri Lanka, and beekeeping in North America.
The Connected for Care programme continues to thrive. It’s a good example of bringing together employee interests and creativity with corporate sustainability themes.
